The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)

The ACLU or American Civil Liberties Union is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization. Their mission is to “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The organization have many members, 1,000,000 members, they also get very good funding in over $100 million. People need to be defended for their civil rights. They have been many cases in which this issue has been happening. A lot of people get violated of their rights by some way. However, it is great that there are organizations that make it their priority to help other individuals out, as well as organizations who fight for the same ideologies.

The ACLU began around the time World War I was taking place.  It was founded in the year 1920 by nine individuals. The nine individuals fought for free speech and anti-war protests. At the time, people of the united states feared that communism was interfering in the United States in the form of the Communist Revolution. It was spreading throughout Russia and would find a way into the U.S. During this time, civil liberties abuses have been taking place. From these events, the American Civil Liberties Union was born and protected the civil liberties of the people. People needed it in a big way in that massive scare. Eventually, the things that they fought for increased and the small organization expanded. Its origins started in New York City, and continues to operate there in their headquarters located in 125 Broad St., 18th floor New York, NY 10004.

This organization makes me feel good to know about. Their objectives of representing people and organizations is great to hear about. However, that isn’t the thing I found truly amazing. There are other things that they fight for. They fight for the notion of the death penalty, the organization supports same-sex marriage, and rights of the LGBT community. From the sound of this, they seem like superheroes to me. The ACLU is fighting for every single aspect that is a part of someone’s civil rights. Birth control has been an important topic lately, and the decisions of been torn between supporting it or going against. This organization supports birth control and the right to have an abortion. Discrimination continues to affect people, and I’m glad to say that this organization combats racism as well.
